CROWN ISLAND is set in Quarrytown, a Connecticut harbor community on Long Island Sound. It centers on Marie Wainwright, owner of the largest and most beautiful of the Granite Islands, and Peter Chello, a sensitive young stonemason who has dropped out of the University to save his family business. Peter begins a project on the island only to fall in love with Marie. She is a lonely novelist whose family has been drowned and whose muse has left her. Peter restores her muse and she, because of her love of the classics, helps him continue his education. Together they reflect on how fate has shaped their pursuits. But their idyll is short- lived. The gods push them in unpredictable directions and over the years they comfort each other at critical moments in their lives. Peter changes most profoundly and experiences a stunning and unexpected resolution to their long relationship. The fate of his marriage and his family hangs in the balance at the end of the novel.
